Ophthalmologists prescribe medications to treat ailments, such as eye diseases, implement laser therapy, and perform surgery when needed. Ophthalmologists provide both primary and specialty eye care—medical and surgical. Most ophthalmologists participate in academic research on eye diseases at some point in their training and many include research as part of their career. Ophthalmology has always been at the forefront of medical research with a long history of advancement and innovation in eye care.

A neurologistis a physician specializing in neurology and trained to investigate, diagnose and treat neurological disorders. Neurologists diagnose and treat myriad neurologic conditions, including strokeepilepsy, movement disorders such as Parkinson's diseasebrain infections, autoimmune neurologic disorders such as multiple sclerosissleep disorders, brain injury, headache disorders like migrainetumors of the brain and dementias such as Alzheimer's disease. Neurologists may also have roles in clinical research,clinical trials, and basic or translational research. Orthopedic surgery or orthopedics (alternative spelling orthopaedics is the branch of surgery concerned with conditions involving the musculoskeletal system. Orthopedic surgeons use both surgical and nonsurgical means to treat musculoskeletal traumaspine diseasessports injuriesdegenerative diseases, infections, tumors, and congenital disorders.
